Prof. Karl Bartz-Schmidt — retinal surgery

Prof. Dr Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt

Prof. Dr Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt (Prof. Dr. Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt) is Medical Director of Tuebingen University Eye Hospital. He operates on the retina and the vitreous body: retinal detachment, bleeding and scar membranes inside the eye, the consequences of severe injury, and tumours within the eye.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

He has led the university eye hospital in Tuebingen since October 2000 and holds a private consultation there. His main field is vitreoretinal disease, that is disease of the retina and of the vitreous body, the clear gel that fills the eye. It covers retinal detachment, macular holes, membranes pulling on the centre of the retina and bleeding caused by diabetes — conditions in which eye treatment means microsurgery and patient follow-up afterwards.

His second field is reconstructive surgery after severe eye injuries, when several structures are damaged at once: the cornea, the lens, the retina. Such operations are often carried out in stages, and each further step is decided by how the eye responds. His third subject is vitreoretinal oncology: the diagnosis and treatment of tumours of the retina and the choroid, where the ophthalmologist works together with oncologists and radiotherapists.

What they are known for

Prof. Dr Karl Ulrich Bartz-Schmidt is a specialist in ophthalmology. On 16 October 2000 he took up the post of Medical Director of the university eye hospital in Tuebingen and has been responsible for its work ever since. Since 2003 he has also been deputy to the chief medical director of Tuebingen University Hospital, which places him in the leadership of the whole university medical centre and not only of the eye hospital. His private consultation is held at the hospital itself.
