He sees patients in Tuebingen and heads the corneal section of the university eye hospital. The cornea is the clear front layer of the eye; when it clouds, scars or changes shape, eye treatment means strengthening the patient’s own tissue or replacing it with donor tissue. He carries out corneal transplantation as a full-thickness graft and as a lamellar procedure, in which only the damaged layer is exchanged.
Corneal surgery is tied to donor tissue: its preparation, assessment and storage decide how well a graft takes. His second field is outpatient cataract surgery — the clouded lens is replaced in a day, with no overnight stay.
