Prof. Dr med. Joachim Liepert (Prof. Dr. med. Joachim Liepert) is Medical Head of Neurorehabilitation at the Allensbach site, the main hospital of Kliniken Schmieder. Patients come to him to recover after a stroke, with movement disorders and spasticity, and for botulinum toxin treatment of muscle spasms.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Liepert heads the neurorehabilitation department of Kliniken Schmieder in Allensbach on Lake Constance. His central theme is rehabilitation after stroke using new therapeutic strategies — methods that help the brain rebuild lost connections and regain control of an arm, a leg or speech. He also treats movement disorders — tremor, spasticity (painful muscle tightness after brain damage), dystonia — and carries out botulinum toxin treatment: injections into the cramped muscles that relax them for several months and make nursing and training easier.
His second field is clinical electrophysiology: EEG (recording the brain’s electrical activity), evoked potentials (testing how well the nerve pathways conduct) and electromyography (examining how muscles and nerves work). These tests show precisely which pathways are damaged and what can realistically be recovered, and the training programme is built on that. Besides neurology he is certified in special neurological intensive care, physical therapy and rehabilitation medicine, so his department also admits patients who still need close monitoring.
What they are known for
Joachim Liepert is authorised to train other doctors in qualified botulinum toxin therapy and in clinical EEG, evoked potentials and electromyography — he is a recognised teacher of these methods, not only a practitioner. His research interests are the plasticity of the motor system, the reorganisation of the brain brought about by rehabilitation, and fatigue in neurological disease. In 2005 he was named lecturer of the year at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, and in 1999 he received the poster prize of the German Society of Neurology. He is a member of the German Society of Neurology (DGN), the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN), the botulinum toxin working group and the German Society for Neurorehabilitation (DGNR).
