Prof. Dr med. Bernhard Meyer (Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Bernhard Meyer) is Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Rechts der Isar Hospital (TUM) in Munich. Patients come to him with brain tumours, aneurysms and other vascular diseases of the brain, and with conditions of the spine that require surgery.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Meyer heads the Department of Neurosurgery at the university hospital Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. One of its main fields is brain tumour surgery and clinical neuro-oncology: removal of gliomas, meningiomas, metastases and other growths while preserving speech, movement and memory, followed by further care together with oncologists and radiotherapists. The second field is vascular neurosurgery: operations for aneurysms (bulges in the wall of a blood vessel), vascular malformations and narrowing of the arteries that supply the brain.
The department also performs spinal surgery – for disc herniation, narrowing of the spinal canal, instability, tumours and injuries of the spine – and works in neurotechnology: the use of implanted systems that read signals from the brain or stimulate the nervous system. What they are known for
The Department of Neurosurgery under Prof. Meyer is part of the Neuro-Kopf-Zentrum (neuro-head centre) of the university hospital Rechts der Isar, where neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists and oncologists work side by side and discuss every complex case at a joint board. It was here that, for the first time in Europe, a brain-computer interface was implanted in a patient with high spinal cord injury and paralysis: the device reads signals from the brain and lets the patient control external systems by thought. Neurotechnology of this kind is one of the key directions that Prof. Meyer is developing in the department.
