Prof. Dr med. Alexander Lauten (Prof. Dr. med. Alexander Lauten) is Chief Physician of the Third Medical Department, the department of cardiology, at Helios Hospital Erfurt in Erfurt. Patients consult him for heart valve disease, coronary artery disease and severe heart failure, above all when a valve can be replaced without open-heart surgery.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Lauten has headed the department of general and interventional cardiology in Erfurt since January 2020. His main field is catheter-based valve therapy: implanting an aortic valve through a puncture in a blood vessel (TAVI) when open-heart surgery would carry too much risk. He also treats structural heart disease and performs catheter procedures for tricuspid regurgitation — a leaking valve between the right atrium and the right ventricle.
His second field is cardiogenic shock, a sudden failure of the heart’s pumping function. In these situations he uses mechanical circulatory support, including the Impella micro-pump, which temporarily takes over part of the work of the heart. He holds an additional qualification in internal intensive care medicine and also looks after the most seriously ill patients in the intensive care unit. He is chief physician for internal medicine at the Helios hospital in Blankenhain as well.
What they are known for
Alexander Lauten studied medicine at the University of Jena, where his doctorate was awarded with distinction, and spent a year as a research associate at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He began in the cardiac surgery departments of the Thuringia University Heart Centre and the University Hospital of Cologne before moving into cardiology: from 2007 he worked at the Thuringia Heart Centre, became a senior physician and took over its TAVI programme in 2013. He completed his habilitation in 2012 and in 2016 was appointed professor for interventional cardiology and heart valve therapy at the Charité in Berlin, where he was leading senior physician until 2019. He headed the working groups on structural heart disease in Jena and Berlin and took part in developing a catheter treatment for tricuspid regurgitation (TricValve).
