Prof. Dr med. Thomas Mückley (Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Mückley) is Chief Physician of the Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at Helios Hospital Erfurt in Erfurt. Patients come to him after severe injuries, with fractures of the pelvis and the hip socket, with pain and deformities of the foot and ankle, and when a fracture will not heal and a second operation is needed.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Mückley has headed the department of trauma surgery and orthopaedics in Erfurt since January 2016, is also chief physician at the Helios hospital in Gotha since 2021 and in Blankenhain since 2022, and in January 2023 became director of the musculoskeletal centre of the Helios hospitals in central Thuringia. The department is approved for the care of the most severely injured patients. His main fields are general trauma care, trauma surgery in older patients, and surgery of the pelvis and the acetabulum, the part of the pelvic bone that forms the hip joint.
A further focus is foot and ankle surgery: deformities, the consequences of earlier injuries and the restoration of a stable, weight-bearing foot. He also performs revision surgery, that is, repeat operations after a first procedure has not worked, and treats non-unions — fractures that have failed to knit, leaving a mobile joint where solid bone should be. In such cases the first question is what prevents healing: unstable fixation, poor blood supply or infection.
What they are known for
Thomas Mückley received his medical licence in 1997, qualified as a specialist in surgery in 2000, gained the focus qualification in trauma surgery in 2003 and became a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2007, the year he also completed his habilitation. Since 2013 he has chaired the regional association of leading orthopaedic and trauma surgeons in Thuringia, since 2015 he has sat on the advisory board of AO Trauma Germany, and since 2016 he has coordinated the Thuringian trauma network. He has led the foot surgery group of AIOD Germany since 2017, and his department may train doctors in orthopaedics and trauma surgery as well as in general surgery.
