Not every trip to Germany begins at a professor’s clinic. Often what is needed is something else: a doctor who will calmly go through the complaints, order the tests, say which specialist to see next — and with whom one can speak in more than German. Dr med. Thomas Rausch runs exactly that kind of practice in Munich.
Who he is and where he practises
Thomas Rausch is a specialist in internal medicine working as a physician and first point of contact. He has run his Munich practice since 2002; since November 2024 it has been at Sebastiansplatz 5 in the city centre. Earlier addresses found in online directories are out of date.
He studied medicine in Freiburg, Hamburg and at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, and took his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg. Since 1997 he has also worked as an emergency physician. He sees patients in German, English, Spanish, Italian and French.
What he does specifically
The basis of the practice is ordinary general internal medicine: working through the complaints, laboratory tests, monitoring chronic conditions, preventive check-ups, and referral to specialists where needed. For a patient arriving from abroad this is often the most useful point of entry: one doctor who sees the whole picture and knows whom to bring in.
His second field is travel medicine and tropical diseases: advice before a trip, vaccinations, and examination on return if something has gone wrong.
The third, unusual in a German practice, is classical Chinese medicine: acupuncture and treatment with Chinese herbs. Rausch trained in this partly in Hangzhou in 2007. It is important to be clear about the frame here: this is an addition to ordinary treatment, not a replacement for it, and in Germany such methods are not covered by statutory insurance — they are paid for separately. He is also trained in manual therapy.

The practice sees patients by appointment only. We agree a time, translate the discharge letters and test results you have so that the doctor can see the starting picture, and tell you the cost of the consultation in advance. If a specialist or a hospital is needed after the examination, we take care of the referral and the booking. The practice invoices you directly.
