Dr med. Erich Bielesch heads the clinic for general and visceral surgery at Helios Klinikum München West. Visceral surgery means operations on the organs of the abdomen: the bowel, the stomach, the gallbladder, hernias of the abdominal wall. Patients come to him both with bowel tumours and with long-standing “ordinary” problems that somehow never got resolved at home.
Where he practises and what he specialises in
Dr Bielesch leads the surgical department of the hospital in Munich’s Pasing district and at the same time heads its Centre for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Minimally invasive means working through several small ports instead of one large incision: less pain afterwards, a shorter stay in hospital, a quicker return to normal life. A substantial share of the abdominal operations at that centre are done this way.
His second field is colorectal surgery — operations on the colon and rectum, including malignant tumours. He is part of the team at the hospital’s bowel disease centre, which is certified by the German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft) as a bowel cancer centre — an outside check of how diagnosis, surgery and follow-up are organised there. The German Cancer Society has also given Dr Bielesch the status of senior colorectal surgeon (Senior-Kolorektalchirurg), a qualification awarded for years of volume and quality in such operations.
His path in the profession
He studied medicine in Munich and did his practical year at the Munich-Pasing hospital — the same one that later joined the Helios group. His doctoral thesis was on closed chest injuries in polytrauma. He qualified as a surgeon in 2004 and in visceral surgery in 2007, worked as a senior physician in the surgical department, and then took charge of it.
