Prof. Dr med. Dr med. dent. Denys J. Loeffelbein heads the clinic for maxillofacial and plastic facial surgery at Helios Klinikum München West. He holds two full degrees, in medicine and in dentistry, and in this speciality that is not a formality: a face has to be rebuilt at once as bone, as a bite and as an appearance.
Where he practises
He has led the department at Helios Klinikum München West since May 2017 and has worked at the hospital since spring 2016. Before Munich he trained in Bochum, then was a senior physician at the Rechts der Isar university hospital of the Technical University of Munich. Alongside this he is one of the founders and directors of MCLINIC, an interdisciplinary specialist centre next to the hospital, where he runs the MFACE service with colleagues.
What he does specifically
Professor Loeffelbein is a certified maxillofacial surgeon and a specialist in oral surgery, with a separate qualification in plastic operations of the head and neck. His main fields are:
- cancer surgery of the head and neck with microvascular reconstruction — where the defect left after a tumour is removed is closed with the patient’s own tissue together with the vessels that feed it;
- correction of the bite and of jaw deformities (orthognathic surgery), with the operation planned in three dimensions beforehand;
- treatment of cleft lip and palate in children;
- injuries of the facial skeleton, both fresh and the after-effects of old fractures;
- plastic and aesthetic operations on the face and neck.
He is part of the hospital’s head and neck tumour centre — so complex cancer cases are reviewed not single-handedly but by a board with oncologists, radiation oncologists and pathologists. He has worked in maxillofacial surgery for more than 25 years.

We book the consultation, send the translated discharge letters, histology and CT scans in advance, provide interpreting at the appointment, and help with accommodation and follow-up after the operation. Payment goes directly to the hospital at its own rates.
