Prof. Dr med. Dr phil. Fuat S. Oduncu heads the clinic for haematology, oncology and palliative medicine at Helios Klinikum München West in Munich. Patients come to him with tumours of the blood and with situations where the point is not simply to prescribe treatment but first to work out exactly what one is dealing with.
Where he practises and what he does
Professor Oduncu has led the department since June 2019. Before that he spent about ten years heading haematology and oncology at Medical Clinic and Outpatient Department IV of the LMU University Hospital in Munich, and in 2018–2019 he was responsible for the city-centre campus of Medical Clinic III.
He is a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on haematology and oncology. He additionally holds qualifications in palliative medicine, haemostaseology (clotting disorders) and medical quality management. The practical side of his work is leukaemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma and other diseases of the blood system, together with the care of patients with advanced tumours, where controlling symptoms and quality of life come first.
What he is known for
Professor Oduncu’s line of research is bispecific and trispecific antibodies. In plain terms: molecules that grip a tumour cell with one “arm” and an immune cell with the other, and so bring the body’s defences directly to the target. For his work in personalised oncology he received the m4 Award and the Vincenz Czerny Prize of the German Society for Haematology and Oncology (DGHO). He is the author of more than two hundred scientific publications, teaches at the University of Munich and works separately on medical ethics — he holds a doctorate in philosophy and a European master’s in bioethics. He has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his public and medical work.
