The nose is one of the rare cases where “looking right” and “breathing” have to be settled by the same operation. That is why people come to nasal surgery by three different routes: some have not been able to breathe properly for years, some are unhappy with the shape, and some arrive for a second operation after an unsuccessful first one. Professor Stefan Holtmann works on all three.
Who he is and where he practises
Stefan Holtmann is a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine with an additional qualification in plastic surgery. He was made an adjunct professor (apl. Professor) in 1995.
His practice is in the centre of Munich, in the Preysing Palais at Residenzstraße 27 — it was founded by his father back in 1963, and Holtmann took it over in 1996. He has been doing nasal surgery for more than forty years. Operations are not carried out at the practice itself but at partner surgical centres and hospitals in Munich, including the Arabellaklinik, where he has worked for many years as a visiting operating surgeon (Belegarzt).
In 2006 he founded the professional association of German nasal surgeons (Expertenrat Deutscher Nasenchirurgen), a forum for exchange between specialists in this narrow field.
What he does specifically
His main work is nasal correction, both functional and aesthetic, and most often both at once. That includes operations on the nasal septum and turbinates for obstructed breathing, and correction of the tip, a dorsal hump, a deviation, or a saddle or wide shape.
A field of its own is revision surgery: when a first correction gave the wrong result or spoiled the breathing. Technically this is harder than a first operation, and by no means every surgeon takes it on.
Alongside that, the practice runs an ordinary ENT clinic: endoscopic surgery of the sinuses, treatment of obstructed nasal breathing, allergic rhinitis and snoring, and diagnostics — endoscopy, hearing and balance tests, allergy testing. By the practice’s own figures, more than 8,000 nasal operations have been performed over the years.

The plan for the operation and its cost are settled only after an examination — nobody does that remotely. You are invoiced directly, and an interpreter is present at the appointment.
