He earned his doctorate in medicine at the University of Hamburg in 1999 following training in neurology, psychiatry, and neuroradiology at RWTH Aachen and the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). After receiving specialist board certification in neurology in 2005, he obtained an additional qualification in special neurological intensive care medicine and worked as a senior physician at UKE until 2013. He completed his habilitation at the University of Hamburg in 2012 and graduated from a postgraduate programme in hospital management at the University of Cologne in 2019.
