Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Dr med. Gerhard Schmidmaier has been leading the department as Medical Director since 1 February 2010. His clinical work focuses on general traumatology, the management of polytrauma patients, and the surgical treatment of pelvic ring fractures, shoulder joint fractures, and hip-proximal femoral fractures. He also treats elbow dislocations, olecranon fractures, radial head fractures, forearm and distal radius fractures, as well as tendon tears.
In addition, he provides specialized care for pseudarthrosis (impaired bone fracture healing) and prepares formal medical expert opinions. What they are known for
He studied human medicine at the Technical University of Munich from 1990 to 1997, earning his doctorate in 1999. Between 1997 and 2010, he completed his clinical training and held senior positions at Charité Berlin, gaining specialist certifications in surgery, trauma surgery, orthopaedics, and special trauma surgery, alongside completing his habilitation in 2004. He leads the Heidelberg Trauma Research Group (HTRG) and is a board member of the Centre for Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery and Paraplegiology. His scientific work has earned awards such as the Hans-Liniger-Preis (2000, 2002), the COPP-Preis (2004), and the Herbert-Lauterbach-Preis (2008). He is an active member of DGOU, DGU, DGCH, the Orthopaedic Research Society, and EBJIS.
