Prof. Dr med. Markus Krane (Prof. Dr. med. Markus Krane) is Medical Head and Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the German Heart Centre in Munich. Patients come to him with heart valve disease and other structural heart conditions, particularly when they hope to keep their own valve or to avoid a large incision through the breastbone.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Krane has headed the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the German Heart Centre in Munich since 1 September 2023. His main field is reconstructive heart valve surgery: repairing the patient’s own valve instead of replacing it with a prosthesis, both in the classic open operation and minimally invasively through small incisions. A particular focus is reconstruction of the aortic valve from the patient’s own pericardium (AVNeo, a technique in which new valve leaflets are cut from the sac surrounding the heart); he has performed more than 200 such operations.
He also uses minimally invasive and robot-assisted techniques and performs catheter-based valve implantation when open surgery is undesirable. In his research Prof. Krane works on cardiac regeneration, the developmental biology of the heart and cardiovascular biobanking, the collection and storage of tissue samples for future studies. What they are known for
Markus Krane studied medicine at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. From 2005 to 2015 he trained at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the German Heart Centre Munich, and in 2009 and 2010 he was a research fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston in a laboratory working on stem cells. He qualified as a specialist in cardiac surgery in 2015, was deputy director of the department of cardiovascular surgery from 2016 to 2021 and headed the Institute for Translational Cardiac Surgery (INSURE) from 2017 to 2021. From 2021 to 2023 he worked as attending surgeon and associate professor at the Department of Cardiac Surgery of Yale School of Medicine in the United States. He received the Dr Rusche Research Prize of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (2011) and the Technical University of Munich’s prize for academic teaching (2013), is a member of the DGTHG, the EACTS and the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Thoracic Disease and the Journal of Clinical Medicine, and acts as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG).
How we arrange an appointment
