Prof. Dr med. Peter Ewert (Prof. Dr. med. Peter Ewert) is Director of the Department of Congenital Heart Defects and Paediatric Cardiology at the German Heart Centre in Munich. Parents bring children with congenital heart defects to him, and adults who were born with a heart defect come for follow-up, especially when the question is whether a catheter procedure can replace open-heart surgery.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Ewert has headed the Department of Congenital Heart Defects and Paediatric Cardiology at the German Heart Centre in Munich since 2012. His main field is interventional paediatric cardiology: treatment through a catheter, a thin tube inserted into a vessel at the groin and guided up to the heart, so that the chest does not need to be opened. A particular focus is the closure of atrial septal defects (openings in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart) with an occluder, a small device placed through the catheter that is gradually covered by the heart’s own tissue.
His second field is adults with congenital heart disease, a separate qualification in Germany known as EMAH. These are patients who were operated on as children and who, years later, need monitoring, a clearer diagnosis and sometimes a further procedure. For families from abroad this means that both a child and an adult with a long-standing heart defect can be seen by one doctor who knows both sides of the problem. What they are known for
Peter Ewert studied medicine in Freiburg and Göttingen and completed his doctorate in 1992 with distinction (magna cum laude) on echocardiography in children with atrial septal defect. After working at the paediatric department of the University of Lübeck, he joined the German Heart Centre Berlin in 1994, becoming senior physician in 2000, head senior physician of the cardiac catheterisation laboratory in 2002 and deputy director of the department for congenital heart defects and paediatric cardiology in 2008. He is a specialist in paediatrics and paediatric cardiology (1996), completed additional training in paediatric intensive care (2001), obtained his habilitation (the German qualification for university teaching) in 2003 on the interventional closure of atrial defects, and gained the additional qualification for adults with congenital heart disease in 2009.
