Prof. Jürgen Hörer — paediatric heart surgeon

Prof. Dr Jürgen Hörer

Prof. Dr med. Jürgen Hörer (Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Hörer) is Director of the Department of Congenital Heart Surgery and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the German Heart Centre in Munich. Newborns and children who need heart surgery are brought to him, and adults with a congenital heart defect come when a repeat or particularly complex operation is needed.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Hörer has headed the Department of Congenital Heart Surgery and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the German Heart Centre in Munich since 2018 and is at the same time full professor of this speciality at the Technical University of Munich. He operates on patients with congenital heart defects of every age, from the first days of life to adulthood: from septal defects to complex malformations that need treatment in several stages.

A particular field of his work is treatment strategies for congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, a rare defect in which the two pumping chambers of the heart have swapped places while blood still flows in the right direction. He works on risk scores for congenital heart surgery, tools that help estimate in advance how demanding an operation will be, and on the development of new materials to replace vessels and heart valves. You can read more about cardiology in Germany and children’s medicine in Germany on our separate pages.

What they are known for

Jürgen Hörer studied medicine at Saarland University, the University of Paris VI and the Inselspital in Bern. From 2001 he trained at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of the German Heart Centre Munich, became a specialist in cardiac surgery and senior physician for congenital heart surgery in 2008, obtained his habilitation (the German qualification for university teaching) in the same year and was appointed adjunct professor in 2015. He was deputy head of the department from 2011 to 2015 and then, from 2015 to 2018, director of the congenital heart surgery department at the Marie Lannelongue Hospital near Paris. He holds the certificate in congenital and paediatric cardiac surgery of the German Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (DGTHG, 2010), received the society’s Hans Georg Borst Prize (2009) and the Young Investigator Award of the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS, 2018), and has been a board member of the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association since 2019.

How we arrange an appointment

AlenMed arranges consultations and treatment with Prof. Hörer. You send us an enquiry with the reports, echocardiograms and images you already have; we translate them into German and agree an appointment at the German Heart Centre in Munich. A medical interpreter accompanies you at the appointment and during the hospital stay, and we help with the visa, airport pick-up and accommodation near the clinic if needed. Diagnostics and treatment are paid directly to the clinic at its official tariffs.
