Prof. Dr med. Maximilian Schultheiß (Prof. Dr. med. Maximilian Schultheiß) is an eye surgeon at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in Munich and a specialist in surgery of the retina and vitreous body. Patients come to him with retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, macular hole and epiretinal membrane, and with cataract when a standard lens cannot be implanted.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Schultheiß has worked at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic since 2023 in a joint practice with Professors Haritoglou and Klink. His main field is surgery of the retina and vitreous body: retinal detachment, diabetic retinal disease, epiretinal membrane (a thin film that puckers the centre of the retina and distorts vision) and macular hole (a small break in the central part of the retina). He also removes cataracts, including with refractive lenses and in difficult cases where the lens has to be fixed to the sclera or iris because the natural support of the lens is damaged.
He performs lamellar corneal transplantation (DMEK, in which only the inner layer of the cornea is replaced), gives intravitreal injections (medication placed directly into the eye) and laser treatment for retinal diseases, and operates on eye injuries. What they are known for
Maximilian Schultheiß studied medicine at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Würzburg, worked at the university eye hospital in Tübingen from 2008 to 2016, became a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO) in 2012 and qualified as an ophthalmologist in Germany in 2013. He was then a senior physician at the eye clinic of Klinikum Stuttgart (2015–2016) and at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf (2016–2022), where he was lead senior physician from 2018. He completed his habilitation at the University of Tübingen in 2018 and was appointed its adjunct professor in 2022; he remains a member of the faculty and teaches there. He received the research prize of the German Ophthalmological Society (2010) and the Dr Karl Robert Brauns Research Prize for Ophthalmology (2019), and his projects Magic Eye (2014) and REVISION (2020) were funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. He is a member of the DOG, the MOG and the German Retinological Society.
