Prof. Anastasios Chatzikonstantinou — neurologist

Prof. Dr Anastasios Chatzikonstantinou

Prof. Dr med. Anastasios Chatzikonstantinou, MBA (Prof. Dr. med. Anastasios Chatzikonstantinou, MBA) is Medical Head of Acute Neurology and Early Rehabilitation at the Allensbach site, the main hospital of Kliniken Schmieder. His patients are people in the first days and weeks after a stroke, people with epilepsy that is hard to control, and people with Parkinson’s disease.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Chatzikonstantinou heads the department of acute neurology and early rehabilitation at Kliniken Schmieder in Allensbach on Lake Constance. Acute neurology means treating sudden diseases of the nervous system while the condition is still unstable; early rehabilitation follows straight on, often still at the bedside, when the patient is only beginning to sit up and speak. He holds an additional qualification in intensive care medicine, so his department also admits seriously ill patients who need monitoring and machine support. The department covers acute neurological conditions in general, with three main themes: stroke, epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease.

After a stroke the department takes the patient over once the acute phase is past and cares for them until they can move on to standard neurological rehabilitation. In epilepsy the professor clarifies the diagnosis — the department records EEGs (the electrical activity of the brain) and evoked potentials (a test of how well the nerve pathways conduct signals) — and adjusts anti-seizure medication. Patients with Parkinson’s disease have their drug regimen reviewed and a programme drawn up to recover movement. If you are looking for neurology in Germany after a recent stroke or for uncontrolled seizures, this is one of the places we suggest.

What they are known for

Anastasios Chatzikonstantinou is a certified neurologist with an additional qualification in intensive care medicine and an MBA. He holds the epileptology certificate of the German Society for Epileptology (DGfE) as well as the certificate and training authorisation for EEG and evoked potentials from the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN); he is also qualified in traffic medicine, the assessment of whether a patient with a neurological illness is fit to drive. His research topics are epilepsy, stroke and electrophysiology. He is a member of the German Society of Neurology (DGN), the DGKN, the German Stroke Society and the German Society for Epileptology.
