Prof. Dr Helmut Friess (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Helmut Friess) is Director of the Department of Surgery at Rechts der Isar Hospital (TUM) in Munich and a visceral surgeon known above all for operations on the pancreas. Patients come to him with pancreatic cancer, tumours of the liver, oesophagus and bowel, diseases of the bile ducts, and whenever a major abdominal operation is needed.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Friess has headed the Department of Surgery at the university hospital Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich since July 2007. His main field is pancreatic surgery: removal of tumours, operations for chronic pancreatitis and cysts, including extensive procedures in which part of the pancreas is removed together with the duodenum and bile duct. Such operations call for experience in this narrow field, and the pancreas is also the subject to which he has devoted his research.
His second field is visceral surgery as a whole (surgery of the abdominal organs): liver resections, operations on the oesophagus and stomach, the colon and rectum, and the bile ducts, as well as endocrine surgery – operations on the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands – and organ transplantation. What they are known for
Helmut Friess began in the Department of General Surgery at Ulm University Hospital (1988–1992) and then spent a research period at the University of California, Irvine (1992–1993). From 1993 to 2001 he rose from resident to senior physician at the Department of Visceral and Transplantation Surgery of the Inselspital university hospital in Bern, where he completed his habilitation on growth factors in pancreatic cancer. From 2001 to 2007 he was lead senior physician of the Department of General, Visceral and Trauma Surgery at Heidelberg University Hospital and held a professorship there in pancreatic surgery with molecular pancreatic research. He is the author of more than 650 original papers and more than 350 review articles in international journals.
