Prof. Dr med. Johannes Hübner (Prof. Dr. med. Johannes Hübner) is Head of Infectious Diseases, Senior Consultant and Deputy Director of Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital (LMU) in Munich. Parents come to him with prolonged, recurrent or unexplained infections in a child, when the usual treatment has not worked.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Hübner is qualified in two fields at once: he is a specialist in paediatrics and also a specialist in microbiology and infection epidemiology, that is, in the organisms that cause infections and the ways they spread. This combination allows him not only to treat the child but also to establish precisely which microorganism is responsible and which medicines will act on it. Paediatric infectious diseases, his main field, covers fever of unknown origin, severe bacterial and viral infections, infections in children with a weakened immune system and questions of vaccination.
Within the hospital he leads the Department of Infectious Diseases and, as Deputy Director, takes part in running the children’s hospital as a whole. For families from abroad this means that a consultation about an infection takes place inside a large university children’s hospital, with a laboratory, departments of other specialties and inpatient wards close at hand should the child need to be admitted.
