Prof. Dr med. Mia Kim (Prof. Dr. med. Mia Kim) is the chief physician of the department of general and visceral surgery at Munich Hospital Harlaching in Munich. She operates on the large bowel and rectum. Patients consult her for bowel cancer, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and anal complaints that cannot be settled without surgery.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Dr med. Mia Kim has led the department of general and visceral surgery in Munich since February 2021, and since June 2022 also at the group hospital in Neuperlach. Most operations are done through small openings rather than a large incision: cancer of the large bowel, diverticular disease of the sigmoid colon, cancer and polyps of the rectum, and rectal prolapse.
Her second field is the gentle surgical treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis, once medication is no longer enough. She also helps with chronic constipation and faecal incontinence, including by nerve stimulation. The whole of proctology belongs to her work: haemorrhoids, anal fistula and abscess, anal fissure and pilonidal sinus. We describe separately how proctology in Germany is organised.
What they are known for
Mia Kim was licensed as a doctor in 2006, became a specialist in visceral surgery in 2013 and gained the additional qualification in proctology in 2015, alongside recognition in special visceral surgery. From 2008 to 2016 she worked as a research fellow and then senior physician at the surgical department of Würzburg University Hospital; from 2018 she headed coloproctology there and was appointed reference surgeon of the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery. She trained in Nantes and in colorectal surgery at Oxford University Hospitals, and in 2017 became a Fellow of the European Board of Coloproctology. She co-authored the German guideline on chronic constipation and the European guideline on mesh in the pelvis, and belongs to the European Society of Coloproctology and the Association of Bavarian Surgeons.
