Prof. Dr med. Harald Kühl (Prof. Dr. med. Harald Kühl) is the chief physician of the department of cardiology, rhythmology and internal intensive care medicine at Munich Hospital Harlaching in Munich. Patients consult him for coronary artery disease, rhythm disorders and diseases of the heart muscle, when the cause has to be established and the need for a procedure on the heart vessels decided.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Dr med. Harald Kühl has led the department in Munich since 2009. The first part of his work is interventional cardiology, treatment through a catheter: a thin instrument is guided to the heart through a vessel in the arm or leg, a narrowed coronary artery is widened and a stent placed if needed. This needs no large incision and restores the blood supply to the heart muscle.
His second field is cardiac imaging. He assesses the heart with ultrasound (echocardiography), MRI and CT, and holds formal certificates in echocardiography and in Doppler ultrasound of the neck vessels. MRI shows scarring and inflammation in the heart muscle, while CT shows the coronary arteries without a catheter. We describe separately what cardiology in Germany covers.
What they are known for
Harald Kühl studied medicine in Mainz, Erlangen and Aachen from 1985 to 1992 and took his doctorate in Aachen in 1994. In Aachen he was a resident, from 2001 a senior physician in cardiology, pneumology and angiology, from 2006 head of cardiac imaging and from 2007 leading senior physician of the catheterisation laboratory. In 2000 and 2001 he researched cardiac MRI at the university hospitals of Leuven and Amsterdam. He completed his habilitation in 2003 and became an adjunct professor in Aachen in 2008. He is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology with recognition in special internal intensive care medicine, an interventional cardiologist of the German Cardiac Society and a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, with more than a hundred papers and book chapters to his name.
