Prof. Dr med. Bärbel Lange-Sperandio (Prof. Dr. med. Bärbel Lange-Sperandio) is Head of Nephrology at Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital (LMU) in Munich. Parents come to her with kidney and urinary tract diseases in children, from recurrent infections and congenital abnormalities to chronic kidney failure.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Lange-Sperandio is a specialist in paediatrics with a subspecialty in paediatric nephrology, that is, in kidney diseases in children and adolescents. Kidney and urinary tract diseases in children include congenital malformations, nephrotic syndrome (a condition in which the kidneys lose protein), glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the kidney’s filtering units), urinary tract infections, high blood pressure of renal origin and chronic kidney disease up to the point where dialysis is needed.
Paediatric nephrology differs from its adult counterpart: many kidney diseases in children are congenital or inherited, and how early they are detected decides whether kidney function can be preserved for years to come. An important part of the department’s work is therefore clarifying the diagnosis when test results are unclear and following up children in whom changes in the kidneys were already seen on ultrasound before birth.
