Prof. Alexander Leber — interventional cardiology

Prof. Dr Alexander Leber

Prof. Dr med. Alexander Leber (Prof. Dr. med. Alexander Leber) is Director and Chief Physician of the Isar Heart Centre and the Department of Cardiology at ISAR Clinic Munich, and a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology. Patients consult him for coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation and valve disease, when the question is whether a catheter procedure can replace open surgery.

Where the doctor practises and what they do

Prof. Leber has headed the Isar Heart Centre since June 2013. He performs cardiac catheterisation and stent treatment through the artery at the wrist, which is easier to tolerate than the groin approach. A further field is the treatment of atrial fibrillation and the closure of the left atrial appendage, the small pouch in which clots form during an irregular heartbeat.

He also offers minimally invasive valve therapy: implantation of an aortic valve through a catheter (TAVI), closure of congenital openings in the wall between the atria, and alcohol septal ablation in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle that obstructs the outflow of blood. He looks after patients with heart failure and holds the highest certification level for cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. What else belongs to cardiology in Germany is described on a separate page.

What they are known for

Alexander Leber studied at the universities of Erlangen, Rennes and Cape Town. From 1998 to 2008 he worked at the Großhadern Hospital of Munich University, latterly as head of the cardiac imaging group, and in 2004 and 2005 he carried out research at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. He completed his habilitation in 2007 and was appointed adjunct professor of internal medicine in 2014. He then worked as a senior physician for interventional cardiology at Klinikum Bogenhausen in Munich, and in 2011 became director of the institute for cardiac imaging and intervention research at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto. He has written more than 300 papers and abstracts and chaired the cardiac CT working group of the German Cardiac Society.
