Prof. Dr Jens Lehmberg (Prof. Dr. Jens Lehmberg) is Chief Physician of the Department of Neurosurgery at Munich Hospital Schwabing in Munich. Patients come to him with tumours of the skull base and the brain, with aneurysms and other vascular disorders of the brain, and with spinal conditions for which surgery is being considered.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Lehmberg has headed the department of neurosurgery in Munich since August 2018. His main field is skull base surgery: the skull base is the area beneath the brain through which the cranial nerves and the large vessels pass, so tumours there are removed through narrow approaches, including endoscopically through the nose. His second field is neuro-oncology and the treatment of brain tumours, where the extent of surgery is planned together with oncologists and radiotherapists.
He also works in vascular neurosurgery — aneurysms (bulges in an artery wall) and vascular malformations; in 2017 he received the certificate in vascular neurosurgery of the German Society of Neurosurgery. A further field is spinal surgery: stabilisation, decompression of nerve structures and the treatment of degenerative change; he obtained the basic certificate of the German Spine Society in 2016.
What they are known for
Jens Lehmberg completed his doctorate in 2002 at the Institute for Surgical Research of Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and his habilitation in 2009 at the Technical University of Munich on cerebral microcirculation after ischaemia. In 2017 he was appointed adjunct professor at the medical faculty of the same university, and in 2014 he completed a Master of Health Business Administration. He has been course director of anatomical dissection workshops in advanced skull base surgery in Munich and in the USA, and since 2010 has taught at skull base and endoscopy courses for neurosurgeons and ENT surgeons in several countries. He has sat on the editorial board of Acta Neurochirurgica since 2008, has published around forty peer-reviewed papers, and belongs to the German and European societies for neurosurgery, neurological intensive care, skull base surgery and spine surgery.
