Prof. Dr med. Roland M. Schmid (Prof. Dr. med. Roland M. Schmid) is Director of the Department of Internal Medicine II at Rechts der Isar Hospital (TUM) in Munich and a gastroenterologist. Patients come to him with diseases of the stomach, bowel, liver and pancreas – and especially with pancreatic cancer, the subject to which he has devoted his research.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Schmid has headed the Department of Internal Medicine II at the university hospital Rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich since 1 October 2002; since the same year he has held the professorship of internal medicine (gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology). He is a specialist in internal medicine (since 1996) with additional qualifications in gastroenterology (1999) and endocrinology (2002) – which means he deals both with diseases of the digestive system and with disorders of the hormone-producing glands.
The central theme of his clinical and scientific work is pancreatic cancer: how it develops, how it can be recognised earlier and which drug combinations act on the tumour. From 2018 to 2023 he was spokesman of the collaborative research centre SFB 1321 «Modelling and Targeting Pancreatic Cancer», which brings together laboratories studying this tumour. How gastroenterology treatment in Germany is organised in general is explained on a separate page.

From 1993 to 2002 he rose from resident to lead senior physician in the Department of Internal Medicine I at Ulm University Hospital. In 2005 he obtained an Executive MBA from the University of St Gallen. His awards include the Wolf Boas Prize (1986), the Ludwig Heilmeyer Medal in Silver (1998), the Merckle Research Prize of the University of Ulm (2001) and the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Medal of the Technical University of Munich (2008).
