Prof. Dr med. Florian Straube (Prof. Dr. med. Florian Straube) is Chief Physician of the Department of Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Munich Hospital Schwabing in Munich. Patients consult him for heart rhythm disorders, above all atrial fibrillation and tachycardias when catheter ablation is being considered, and for coronary artery disease.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Straube is a specialist in internal medicine and cardiology with additional qualifications in invasive electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, heart failure and sports medicine. His main field is invasive electrophysiology: a catheter is used to find where in the heart the faulty electrical impulse arises, and that spot is then treated precisely. He performs such ablations for supraventricular tachycardias, atrial fibrillation, frequent ventricular extra beats and ventricular tachycardias.
His second field is the diagnosis and treatment of the coronary arteries: angiography, balloon dilatation and stenting, together with intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography, which show the vessel wall from the inside. He also closes a patent foramen ovale or an atrial septal defect — openings between the atria that can cause a cardiac event or a stroke in young people — through a catheter rather than open surgery. A further focus is sports cardiology with certified exercise testing; he coordinates the medical care of the women’s national teams of the German ice hockey federation.
What they are known for
Florian Straube works on new technologies for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation and takes part in national and international studies, both single-centre and multicentre, as an investigator under good clinical practice rules. He reviews scientific journals and congress abstracts, gives lectures and chairs sessions at German and international congresses, and from 2019 to 2021 was an elected nucleus member of the electrophysiology working group of the German Cardiac Society, which also asks him to assess applications for the additional qualification in special rhythmology. He belongs to the German and European societies of cardiology, to the European Heart Rhythm Association and the Heart Rhythm Society, and to the associations of sports physicians.
