Neurosurgery is a field where the cost of a decision is particularly high: running past the site of the operation are the structures that govern movement, sensation and the work of the pelvic organs. What matters most here is therefore not the technique itself but sober judgement about indications — knowing when an operation really changes the situation and when it only adds risk.
Who he is and where he practises
Prof. Dr med. Francisco José de Moura Theophilo is chief physician of the neurosurgery department at Helios München Perlach in Munich. His professorship was awarded by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; he has worked in Germany for many years.
Note the spelling of the surname: it is often rendered as “Teofilo” or “Teófilo”, which makes the doctor hard to find in German sources. The correct spelling is Theophilo. The Perlach hospital belongs to the Helios group and works together with its other Munich sites, so some consultations and procedures may take place at different addresses within the group.
What he does specifically
His main clinical focus is disease and injury of the nervous structures of the spine: compression of the spinal cord and nerve roots, disc herniations in the neck and lower back, narrowing of the spinal canal, instability of the vertebrae, the consequences of injuries and fractures, and tumours of the spine and its coverings.
A large part of the work is microsurgery: the operation is done under an operating microscope through a small access, which allows a nerve to be freed without destroying the supporting structures around it. Where stabilisation is needed, fixation systems are used; where decompression is enough, that is where it stops. Such decisions are not made alone: in German hospitals complex spinal cases are discussed jointly by neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists and rehabilitation specialists.

We gather your records — MRI and CT scans with their reports, neurologists’ opinions, details of earlier operations — translate them and send them to the hospital for a preliminary assessment. The reply makes clear whether the trip is warranted and which examinations will have to be repeated on site, because German doctors rely on images whose quality they can check themselves. Then comes the date, the documents for the visa, meeting you on arrival, and an interpreter at the appointment. The hospital issues the invoice and payment goes directly to it.
