He sees patients in Tuebingen. Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve, usually linked to raised pressure inside the eye; lost visual field does not come back, so eye treatment aims to stop further loss. He adjusts the drops, uses laser where needed and operates to create a new drainage route, then follows the pressure and the nerve over time.
His second field is cataract surgery and the anterior segment: cornea, iris, lens and the angle through which the fluid drains. In glaucoma the two overlap — replacing a clouded lens can itself lower the pressure, and the question is whether one operation is enough or should be combined with a glaucoma procedure.
