
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Dr med. Markus Weigand completed his human medicine studies at the University of Ulm from 1986 to 1992 and at Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich from 1992 to 1993, receiving his doctorate in 1993. In 1994, he worked as a junior doctor at the Augsburg Central Clinic and Heidelberg University, joining the Department of Anaesthesiology in Heidelberg as a resident in 1995. He obtained specialist recognition in anaesthesiology and became a senior physician in 2002, completed his habilitation in 2004, and served as managing senior physician from 2005.
In 2007, he became leading senior physician and deputy medical director in Heidelberg. From 2008 to 2014, he led the Department of Anaesthesiology, Operative Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the University of Giessen. Since October 2014, he has served as Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at Heidelberg University Hospital, and in July 2024, he was appointed Deputy Chief Medical Director of the hospital.
What they are known for
Prof. Dr med. Markus Weigand was awarded the European Diploma in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (DEAA) in 2002. He holds additional qualifications in emergency medicine and special anaesthesiological intensive care medicine. His main research field involves immunological changes in sepsis, supported by scientific research stays at the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) in Heidelberg in 1998 and the Basel Institute for Immunology in 2001.
His scientific achievements include the Karl Thomas Prize of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI) and the Award of the Heidelberg Surgical Foundation in 2004, as well as winning the BMBF Medical Technology Innovation Competition in 2007. Having served as secretary from 2009 to 2017, he has been Chairman of the German Sepsis Society since 2017 and a member of the advisory board of the Paul Ehrlich Society since 2018.
