Prof. Dr Meinrad Paul Gawaz (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Meinrad Paul Gawaz) is Medical Director and Chair of Internal Medicine and Cardiology, heading the department of Internal Medicine III — Cardiology and Angiology at Tuebingen University Hospital. Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Gawaz has headed Internal Medicine III in Tuebingen since 2004. He is a specialist in internal medicine, cardiology and angiology, which means that he deals both with the heart and with the vessels. His main clinical field is interventional cardiology: treatment through a catheter that is guided through a vessel to the heart in order to widen a narrowed artery and place a stent.
His second field is heart failure, where the task is to choose and monitor the medication when the heart no longer copes with everyday load. In research he works on myocardial infarction, thrombosis and inflammation of the vessel wall, platelets and the development of new drugs, and on the prevention of atherosclerosis, the deposits that narrow the arteries.
What they are known for
Meinrad Paul Gawaz studied medicine in Munich, Cambridge and Stanford from 1981 to 1987. He held a fellowship of the German Research Foundation at the University of Louisville and the Scripps Clinic in the USA and then worked as a physician at Großhadern Hospital and at Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich. He qualified as a specialist in internal medicine and completed his habilitation in 1997, became a specialist in cardiology in 1998, adjunct professor at the Technical University of Munich in 2001 and a specialist in angiology in 2004. From 2012 to 2019 he was speaker of a clinical research unit of the German Research Foundation. He has received the Rudolf Schoenheimer Medal, the Paul Morawitz Prize and the Alexander Schmidt Prize and belongs to German and European cardiac societies.
