Prof. Dr med. Michael Joner (Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Michael Joner) is Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at the German Heart Centre in Munich. Patients come to him with atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries and structural heart disease, above all valve disorders, when the condition of the vessels needs to be assessed precisely and the question is whether catheter-based treatment is possible.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Joner works at the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases of the German Heart Centre in Munich, where he is deputy director, and at the same time holds a professorship of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) for early clinical trials at the university hospital of the Technical University of Munich. His first field is atherosclerosis: he studies high-risk markers and the molecular imaging of atherosclerotic plaques (cholesterol deposits in the artery wall), that is, ways of seeing which plaque is stable and which threatens to rupture and cause a heart attack.
His second field is structural heart disease, above all valve disorders, and their catheter-based treatment, in which a valve or device is brought to the heart through a blood vessel without opening the chest. The third is novel imaging catheters and percutaneous interventional procedures that are undergoing clinical evaluation in his group. What they are known for
Michael Joner leads a research group at the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), Germany’s national research network for heart and vascular disease. As DZHK professor for early clinical trials he is responsible for the stage at which new catheters, implants and techniques are used in patients for the first time, the stage at which it becomes clear whether a method is safe and worth pursuing. For a patient this means seeing a doctor who knows not only today’s standards of treatment but also the methods still under evaluation, and who can say soberly which new developments are actually proven.
