Prof. Dr med. Thomas Klink (Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Klink) is an eye surgeon at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in Munich and a specialist in glaucoma surgery. Patients come to him when drops and laser no longer keep the eye pressure under control, and also with corneal disease, cataract and eyelid problems.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Klink has operated at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic since 2015 in a joint practice with Professors Haritoglou and Schultheiß. His main field is glaucoma surgery (glaucoma is a condition in which raised pressure inside the eye gradually damages the optic nerve). He performs all the main types of operation: non-penetrating and penetrating procedures, surgery on the drainage angle of the eye, laser surgery and the implantation of drainage devices that carry excess fluid out of the eye.
His second area is corneal surgery – both full-thickness transplantation and lamellar procedures, in which only the damaged layer of the cornea is replaced. He also removes cataracts (the clouded lens) with refractive lens implants that correct eyesight, and performs reconstructive and aesthetic eyelid surgery. How eye treatment in Germany works in general is described on a separate page.
What they are known for
Thomas Klink studied medicine at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, passed his state examination and obtained his doctorate in 1996, then trained at the university eye hospital in Würzburg and qualified as an ophthalmologist in 2002. He was appointed adjunct professor in 2013 and in 2014–2015 held the acting professorship for glaucoma at the University of Würzburg. Since 2010 he has held the German Ophthalmological Society’s certificate in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, and since 2011 he has directed continuing education in this field. He has been a member of the European Glaucoma Society since 2007, belongs to the DOG and BVA, and sits on the editorial boards of Klinische Monatsblätter für Augenheilkunde and Ophthalmochirurgie.
