Prof. Dr Michael Janusz Koss (Prof. Dr. Michael Janusz Koss) is an eye surgeon at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in Munich and a specialist in the retina and cataract surgery. Patients come to him when the clouded lens needs replacing and they would like to be free of glasses at the same time, and with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease and glaucoma.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Koss operates at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in his own practice with colleagues. His main field is cataract surgery with refractive intraocular lenses: toric lenses (which correct astigmatism), multifocal lenses (for distance and near vision), add-on lenses and phakic lenses that are placed alongside the natural lens. He also performs refractive laser treatment and corneal surgery – both lamellar and full-thickness transplantation.
For glaucoma he implants MIGS devices (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, in which tiny implants lower the pressure inside the eye). As a retina specialist he gives intravitreal injections (medication placed directly into the eye) for age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease and retinal vein occlusion, and performs micropulse laser treatment and laser vitreolysis – dissolving the opacities in the vitreous body that are seen as «floaters». What they are known for
Michael Koss studied medicine in Erlangen and at the Technical University and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, and trained as an ophthalmologist at the university eye hospital in Frankfurt am Main. In 2010 he obtained his German and European specialist qualifications (FEBO) and founded the Retina research centre in Frankfurt; he worked there as a senior physician from 2010 to 2012 and completed his habilitation at Goethe University in 2012. A research fellowship funded by the German Research Foundation took him to the University of Southern California (2012–2014), after which he was senior physician and head of retinology at the university eye hospital in Heidelberg (2014–2016). In 2016 he was appointed adjunct professor at Heidelberg University and obtained a Master of Healthcare Administration. His awards include the Leonhard Klein Prize of the German Ophthalmological Society (2013), film prizes of the German Ophthalmic Surgeons (2007, 2010) and of the American Society of Retina Specialists (2010), and the prize for the best retinal surgery lecture at the DOC congress (2014).
