Prof. Dr Ulrich C. Schaller (Prof. h.c. Dr. Ulrich C. Schaller) is Deputy Lead Physician of the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic in Munich and an eye surgeon specialising in surgery of the eyelids and eye socket. Patients come to him with cataract, tumours of the eye and eyelids, blocked tear ducts, and when eyelids need to be rebuilt after injury or disease.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Schaller has operated at the Herzog Carl Theodor Eye Clinic since July 2013 in a joint practice with Dr Rehfeld, and he also serves as the clinic’s Deputy Lead Physician. One of his main fields is cataract surgery (replacing the clouded natural lens with an artificial one). The other is plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids and orbit: he corrects drooping and inturned eyelids, rebuilds eyelids after injuries and tumour removal, and operates on the orbit (the bony socket that holds the eye).
Prof. Schaller also works in ophthalmic oncology – removing tumours of the eye, the eyelids and the surrounding tissue – and in surgery of the tear drainage system, when a blocked duct makes the eye water constantly. In addition he removes pterygium (a growth of tissue over the cornea) and gives intravitreal injections (medication placed directly into the eye) for macular degeneration and other retinal diseases. How eye treatment in Germany works in general is described on a separate page.
What they are known for
Ulrich Schaller studied medicine at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, obtained his licence to practise and his doctorate in 1998, and worked at the university eye hospital in Munich from 1998 to 2004, qualifying as an ophthalmologist in 2002. In 2004–2005 he taught at the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of Nairobi under the long-term lecturer programme of the German Academic Exchange Service. Back in Munich he was a senior physician at the university eye hospital from 2006 to 2011, completed his habilitation in 2008, and from 2011 to 2013 was lead senior physician at the eye clinic of Klinikum Augsburg. In 2020 he was awarded an honorary professorship by the State Medical University of Turkmenistan, recognised by the Bavarian Medical Association in 2022. He has taught and examined at the medical faculty of the University of Munich since 2008, has served as an honorary judge at the Munich Social Court since 2016, and speaks regularly at DOG, AAD and ARVO congresses.
