Prof. Dr med. univ. Georg Bartsch (Prof. Dr. med. univ. Georg Bartsch) is Chief Physician of the Department of Urology and head of the interdisciplinary centre for robot-assisted surgery at the Markus Hospital, part of Agaplesion Frankfurt Diakonie Hospital in Frankfurt am Main. Patients come to him with cancers of the prostate, bladder and kidney, and when they need a reconstructive operation on the urinary tract.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Bartsch has led the Department of Urology at the Markus Hospital since November 2020; from 2018 he headed the hospital’s department of robot-assisted urology and urological oncology. His main field is robot-assisted and minimally invasive surgery — operations through small incisions, with instruments guided by the surgeon from a console. He operates on tumours of the prostate, bladder and kidney and has performed more than 500 cystectomies (removal of the bladder), more than 1,000 radical prostatectomies (removal of the prostate gland) and more than 1,000 robot-assisted procedures.
His work does not end in the operating theatre. He also oversees drug treatment of urological tumours, such as chemotherapy and hormone therapy, and practises reconstructive urology, which restores the urinary tract after operations, injuries or strictures (narrowings). What they are known for
Georg Bartsch studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck and spent two years as a research fellow at the Children’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston. He trained as a urologist at the University of Ulm, completed his habilitation there in 2008 (the German postdoctoral qualification for university teaching) and then worked as a clinical fellow and assistant professor at the University of Southern California. Back in Germany he was deputy director of the urology departments at Frankfurt University Hospital and at the University Medical Centre Mainz; since 2015 he has been an adjunct professor of Goethe University Frankfurt. He received the Maximilian Nitze Prize of the German Society of Urology in 2007, has published more than 125 scientific papers, is a member of the DGU, AUO, EAU and SWGDU and serves as vice chairman of the German working group on castration-resistant prostate cancer (a tumour that no longer responds to hormone treatment). He also reviews for European Urology, the Journal of Urology and BJU International.
