Prof. Dr med. Christoph-Eckhard Heyde (Prof. Dr. med. Christoph-Eckhard Heyde) is Managing Director of the Department of Orthopaedics, Trauma Surgery and Plastic Surgery and head of spine surgery and of the children’s spine centre at Leipzig University Hospital in Leipzig. Patients come to him with back pain, with deformity and instability of the spine, with the consequences of injury, and with children whose spine is curved.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Heyde diagnoses and treats disorders of the spine in patients of every age, from children to the very old. A large part of his work involves no operation at all: the treatment of acute and chronic pain, minimally invasive measures such as targeted injections at a nerve root, and multimodal pain therapy, in which doctors, physiotherapists and psychologists work with the patient at the same time. Surgery is considered only once conservative options are exhausted or the nerve structures are at risk.
His surgical work covers spinal injuries, degenerative change, instability, rheumatic disease, tumours, osteoporosis with vertebral fractures and deformities in children. He is a specialist in orthopaedics as well as in orthopaedics and trauma surgery, with additional qualifications in special orthopaedic surgery, rheumatology and sports medicine — which allows him to see a spinal problem in the wider context of orthopaedics rather than as one isolated segment.
What they are known for
Christoph-Eckhard Heyde holds the excellence certificate of the German Spine Society and the European Spine Course Diploma. He is medical director of ZESBO, the university’s research centre for the musculoskeletal system in Leipzig. His research is devoted to chronic spinal pain, minimally invasive injection techniques, methods of spinal fusion and the improvement of implants. He is a member of the German societies for orthopaedics and trauma surgery, of the German Spine Society, of EUROSPINE, of the professional association of orthopaedic and trauma surgeons and of the Marburger Bund doctors’ association.
