Dr med. Georg Schön (Dr. med. Georg Schön) is Chief Physician of Urology at Urology Clinic Munich-Planegg near Munich. Patients consult him with tumours of the kidney, prostate and bladder, when the tumour must be removed while the organ and its function are preserved.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Dr Schön has headed urology in Planegg since 2020. His main instrument is the da Vinci robotic system: the surgeon works at a console, the instruments repeat hand movements on a reduced scale, and access is through small incisions. This is how he performs organ-preserving surgery for kidney cancer, removing the tumour and keeping the kidney — which matters especially with a single kidney or tumours on both sides.
He also carries out nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, preserving the nerve bundles responsible for continence and erectile function, and radical cystectomy with a new bladder formed from the patient’s bowel. He works on the robotic technique itself, on extraperitoneal and retroperitoneal access routes, where the instruments do not pass through the abdominal cavity and the bowel is left undisturbed.
What they are known for
Georg Schön studied medicine at the University of Regensburg and at Klinikum rechts der Isar from 1974 to 1980, began as a resident in urology at Klinikum Weiden, was senior physician at the Missionsärztliche Klinik from 1985 to 1998, headed urology at Klinikum Hof until 2002 and the urology clinic at Klinikum Würzburg Mitte from 2002 to 2019. He is a urology specialist with further training in special urological surgery. The clinic he heads serves as a European reference centre for robotic kidney surgery, and for ten years he trained European teams in the da Vinci technique. He has six video prizes of the German Society of Urology and belongs to DGU, the German Society for Robot-Assisted Urology (DGRU), the American Urological Association and volunteer doctors’ organisations.
