Prof. Dr med. Ulrich Sure (Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Sure) is the director of the department of neurosurgery and spinal surgery at Essen University Hospital. Patients consult him for brain tumours, vascular malformations of the brain, acoustic neuroma, severe epilepsy and diseases of the spine, when the question of an operation arises.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
He has headed the department in Essen since 2008 and is a specialist in neurosurgery and intensive care medicine. One of his fields is vascular neurosurgery, including cavernomas of the brainstem, tangles of altered vessels that may bleed and lie in the least accessible part of the brain. The second is surgery for brain tumours and for acoustic neuroma, a benign tumour growing on the nerve of hearing and balance. We describe separately how brain tumour treatment in Germany is arranged.
The third field is endoscopic skull base surgery, reaching a tumour through natural passages such as the nose, without opening the skull. The fourth is epilepsy surgery, when seizures do not respond to medication and removing the focus helps. The fifth is surgery of the spine, including minimally invasive techniques. His research deals with imaging during the operation, the molecular basis of vascular and tumour diseases of the brain, and ultra-high-field MRI, which gives a more detailed picture than an ordinary MRI scan in Germany.
What they are known for
Ulrich Sure studied medicine in Berlin and Freiburg from 1986 to 1993 and spent 1993 as a post-doctoral researcher in Zurich. He was a resident in Aachen and Marburg from 1994, a senior physician from 1999 and deputy director of the department in Marburg from 2002 to 2007, where he was made adjunct professor in 2006. Since 2008 he has directed the department of neurosurgery in Essen. From 2016 to 2022 he was editor-in-chief of Neurosurgical Review. He belongs to the German neurosurgical societies, the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, the American neurosurgical associations and the German Cancer Society, and is an honorary member of the Ukrainian and Croatian neurosurgical societies.
