Prof. Dr med. Lars Zender (Univ. Prof. Dr. med. Lars Zender) is Medical Director of the Department of Medical Oncology and Pneumology, Internal Medicine VIII, at Tuebingen University Hospital. Patients consult him about cancers that are treated with medicines, and when a standard therapy has stopped working.
Where the doctor practises and what they do
Prof. Zender has headed the department of medical oncology and pneumology since 2016. Medical oncology means treating tumours with medicines: chemotherapy, targeted drugs that act on particular changes inside the tumour cells, and immunotherapy. What else belongs to cancer treatment in Germany is described on a separate page.
A further field is personalised oncology, in which the tumour is examined at molecular level so that the drug can be matched to its particular features. He leads phase I and phase II clinical trials, which are open to patients who have already completed standard treatment. Difficult cases are decided at the tumour board together with surgeons, radiotherapists and pathologists.
What they are known for
Lars Zender studied medicine at Hannover Medical School from 1995 to 2002 and took his doctorate summa cum laude. He began as a resident in internal medicine and gastroenterology, worked from 2005 to 2007 at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the USA, and then led a research group at the Helmholtz Centre with a project on liver regeneration. He became assistant professor in 2009, full professor in Tuebingen in 2012, and has directed Internal Medicine VIII since 2016. He is speaker of the iFIT cluster of excellence and managing director of the National Centre for Tumour Diseases in south-west Germany. He has received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation and the German Cancer Award, belongs to international scientific societies and is an editor of a scientific journal on carcinogenesis.
